Card Focus: Classification (Categories)

Learn how to assign your assets to categories and sub-categories to keep your inventory organized and easy to filter.

The second part of the “Classification” card allows you to assign your asset to a specific category. This is one of the most powerful ways to organize and filter your inventory.

How Categories Work

The category system is hierarchical. This means you can have a main Category and a more specific Sub-category.

  • Example: An events company might have a main category called “Audio.” Within that, you could have sub-categories like “Microphones,” “Speakers,” and “Mixers.”
  • Best Practice: Be as specific as possible. Placing a wireless handheld mic in the “Microphones” sub-category is more useful for filtering than just putting it in the general “Audio” category.

Assigning a Category

  • Click the main Category dropdown and select a top-level category.
  • If the category you selected has sub-categories defined, a second dropdown will automatically appear below it.
  • Select the most appropriate Sub-category from the second dropdown.

Creating New Categories

If the category you need doesn’t exist, you can create it without leaving the page.

  • Click the “Create” button next to the category dropdown.
  • A popup will appear allowing you to create a new top-level category or a sub-category under an existing one.

For a complete guide on organizing your categories, see Managing Categories in Settings.
