Already using Snipe-IT? The switching guide covers getting your data out and in, and when you would be better off staying put.
Read this first: if you want to host it yourself, use Snipe-IT
Snipe-IT is open source, and self-hosted it is free forever — with unlimited users and unlimited assets. Their own words are that Snipe-IT “is and always will be free”. You can read the code, change it, and keep the whole thing on your own network. Asset Giant cannot be self-hosted. If that is your requirement, Snipe-IT is the answer and we are not going to argue with it to win a click.
If you would rather not run a server, the choice is between paying them to host it and paying us — and that is a fair comparison, which is what the rest of this page is. It applies just as much to an IT estate: being responsible for the laptops does not mean wanting to be responsible for another service to patch, back up and keep upgraded.
Hosted against hosted: what the two actually cost
Asset Giant’s Crew plan is £19 a month for 500 assets and three users, and the hosting, the backups, the upgrades and the security patching are ours to do — on every plan, including the Free Forever plan underneath it at 100 assets, no card, no countdown.
Read from Snipe-IT’s own pricing page on 24 September 2026: hosted Basic is US$39.99 a month, or US$399.99 a year. Their own table lists that tier as excluding automatic backups, automated upgrades and server maintenance — those start on the Small Business tier at US$99.99 a month, and dedicated hosting is US$249.99. So the tier that does for you what every one of our plans does, free one included, begins at US$99.99.
Both limits matter, so here are both. Every one of their hosted tiers carries unlimited assets and unlimited users, against our 500 assets and three users at £19. On volume theirs is the better value, and past a few thousand items the comparison moves their way. What our £19 covers is everything around the register: the hosting and the upkeep, the AI, the label designer and printing, and the quotes and invoices.
And if you are weighing the free route, in their own words: their requirements page asks for PHP 8.2 or newer, MySQL or MariaDB, mod_rewrite and “SSH access to the server”, and the upgrades, backups and patching are yours for as long as you run it.
AI that does the typing for you
Photograph a tool and Asset Giant catalogues it. It works out what the item is, then fills in the make, model and specifications for you. Building a register becomes pointing a phone at things rather than typing a spreadsheet.
- Identify from a photograph — the fastest way to get a few hundred items in.
- Auto-fill the specifications — give it a make and model and it completes the detail fields.
- Ask it in plain English — “what’s out on the Riverside job?”, “what’s worth the most?”, “what’s free next week?”
- On every plan, including the free one — not a premium tier, not an add-on.
On Snipe-IT’s side, we looked and said so rather than guessing. On 24 September 2026 we read their pricing page tier by tier, their feature page, their homepage and their own GitHub README. None of the four names an AI or machine-learning feature. If that changes, this paragraph is the first thing on the page to re-check.
Quoting, invoicing and hire charging are in the box
Asset Giant does the paperwork as well as the register. Quotes, invoices and credit notes, raised from the kit you already track:
- Hire priced properly — by the hour, day, week or month, against your own chargeable days and minimum charges.
- Everything else on the same document — labour, call-outs and delivery as saved rate items; your own section headings, subtotals and free-text lines; discounts and per-line overrides.
- Tax that fits your country — name it VAT, GST or sales tax and that word is what prints. Add as many rates as you need, and it is fully compliant for UK VAT: zero-rated, exempt and the construction domestic reverse charge kept genuinely separate rather than collapsed into “0%”.
- Paid straight to you — connect your own Stripe account and the client gets a Pay button on the invoice. The money lands in your Stripe balance; we take no cut and no application fee.
On Snipe-IT’s side, the same four sources on the same day. None of them names a rental, hire, invoicing or quoting feature; their own README describes the product as “asset management in IT Operations”. Charging a customer is not what it is for, and that is a fair description rather than a criticism.
Where we stop, plainly: we are not a full hire platform. A dedicated system gives you a public booking storefront your customers order through, and we have nothing of the kind.
What else the £19 includes
One price, and the rest of the product comes with it. There is no add-on list and no feature held back for a higher tier:
- QR labels you design and print — a visual designer, batch printing to standard label sheets from the stationery cupboard, and pre-printed stickers you can assign.
- A scanner that is just the phone — point the camera at a label and the record opens. Nothing to install, on any handset, for anyone you give access to.
- Check kit in and out, and book it ahead — who has it, where it is, when it is due back, and a calendar that stops two jobs claiming the same item.
- Jobs, clients, sites and vans — assign kit to a project or a location, and share a client-facing page that shows only what you choose.
- Reminders that arrive on their own — servicing, calibration, insurance and hire returns, by email, to the people you name.
- A UK company, UK support and prices in pounds — and no overnight gap for a reply.
The short version
- Self-hosted Snipe-IT is free forever, with unlimited users and unlimited assets, and we are not pretending otherwise. What it asks for is a server, PHP 8.2 or newer, a database and SSH access to the box — plus the upgrades, backups and security patching, for as long as you run it.
- Asset Giant cannot be self-hosted. If owning the code or keeping it on your own network is the requirement, Snipe-IT is the answer and this page says so first.
- Nothing to host with us. No server, no PHP version to keep current, no database backups to remember, no security patch that becomes your problem at 11pm.
- Their hosted Basic plan is US$39.99/month for unlimited assets and users; their own table lists it as excluding automatic backups, automated upgrades and server maintenance, which start at US$99.99/month (checked 24 September 2026).
- Ours is £19/month for 500 assets and three users, in pounds, with the hosting and the upkeep included — and Free Forever underneath it at 100 assets, no card, no countdown.
- On volume their hosted plan is better value, and this page says so: unlimited assets and users against our 500 and three.
- Every one of our plans includes the AI — photograph a tool and it is identified and specced for you automatically.
- Every one of our plans prints your own QR labels — a visual designer, batch printing to standard label sheets, and pre-printed stickers you can assign.
- Quotes, invoices and hire charging are included — priced hire, labour lines, your own headings and subtotals, and full UK VAT. Quotes are unlimited on every plan.
- They record maintenance and what it cost; we also schedule it and keep the certificate. A Snipe-IT maintenance carries a type, a supplier, a start and completion date, notes and a cost, and the asset keeps the full history. Ours adds the bit that repeats — a job with an interval that re-arms itself from the date the work was actually done — plus the result that decides whether it is finished, the certificate attached to that record, and an email weeks before anything lapses.
- They are broader than us on depreciation, software licences, accessories and components, and LDAP — see below.
Where we are genuinely better
Nothing to run, nothing to patch
You open an account and start. There is no server, no PHP version to keep current, no database to back up and no security update that is yours to apply. Upgrades arrive without you doing anything, on every plan including the free one.
AI on every plan
Photograph a tool and Asset Giant identifies it, fills in the make, model and specifications, and drafts the record for you to approve. You can also ask your inventory questions in plain English. Included on every plan, free one included.
Design and print your own labels
A visual QR label designer, a print queue for batch-printing to standard label sheets, and the option to assign pre-printed stickers. Print them on a sheet from the stationery cupboard tonight, then scan them with a phone — there is no app to install.
Organised around jobs, not an org chart
Assign kit to a project, see what is on which site or in which van, book it out for a date, and share a client-facing page that shows only what you choose. Snipe-IT is organised around companies, departments and locations — an IT estate rather than a run of jobs.
Where Snipe-IT is better than us
A longer list than on any other page on this site, and every line of it read from their own material on 24 September 2026.
- It is free, forever, if you host it. Unlimited assets and unlimited users, for the cost of a server and your time. We cannot beat free and we are not going to claim we can.
- It is open source. You can read the code, change it, and never depend on a vendor staying in business. That is a serious advantage and we do not offer it.
- Unlimited assets and users on every hosted tier. Ours are tiered by asset count, so past a few thousand items the comparison moves their way.
- Depreciation. They have depreciation types; we have purchase records and values, but no depreciation schedules.
- Software licences, accessories and components as records in their own right. Licence seats, who holds them and what is left — that is a first-class part of their product and it is not part of ours.
- LDAP sync and login, and IP restrictions. If your users come from a directory and your security policy is written around one, that is their territory.
If you want your own copy on your own server, Snipe-IT is the better answer and we would rather say so here than have you switch and regret it. If you would rather nobody in your business ever had to patch a server — whether what you are tracking is a fleet of laptops or a van full of tools — that is what we are for.

Common questions
Asset Giant vs Snipe-IT: which should I choose?
Choose Snipe-IT if you want to run your own copy: it is open source, self-hosted it is free forever with unlimited users and unlimited assets, and Asset Giant cannot be self-hosted. Choose Asset Giant if you would rather have nothing to host or patch — £19 a month for 500 assets and three users, with the hosting, backups and upgrades included, AI cataloguing from a photograph, QR labels you design and print, bookings, and quotes and invoices in the same place. If you are comparing the two hosted, their tiers are unlimited on assets and users, and the tier that includes automatic backups, automated upgrades and server maintenance is US$99.99 a month. Checked on 24 September 2026.
Is Snipe-IT free?
Yes, if you host it yourself — it is open source and there is no licence fee. Their own site says Snipe-IT “is and always will be free” to self-host. What it costs you is a server and the time to run it: their requirements page asks for PHP 8.2 or newer, MySQL or MariaDB, mod_rewrite and SSH access to the server, and the upgrades, backups and security patching are then yours. Checked on 24 September 2026.
How much does Snipe-IT hosting cost?
Read from their own pricing page on 24 September 2026: Basic hosting is US$39.99 a month or US$399.99 a year, Small Business is US$99.99 or US$999.99, and Dedicated (Small) is US$249.99 or US$2,499.99. Every tier is unlimited on users and assets. Their table lists Basic as excluding automatic backups, automated upgrades and server maintenance — those begin on the US$99.99 tier.
Can Asset Giant be self-hosted?
No. We are a hosted service and we run it for you — backups, updates and security included on every plan, free one included. If self-hosting is a requirement, because of an internal policy or because you want to own the code, Snipe-IT is the better answer and we would say so.
Can you import a Snipe-IT export?
Yes. Export to CSV and import it yourself, mapping your own columns with a full preview before anything saves. Or send us the file and we will load it by hand at no charge on any paid plan — assets, locations, categories and clients.
