Moving From Snipe-IT to Asset Giant

How to export your assets from Snipe-IT as a CSV, which Snipe-IT columns become which Asset Giant fields, what has no home here — and when you should stay with Snipe-IT.

Your asset list moves across as a CSV. Snipe-IT builds one for you from the columns you pick, Asset Giant reads it, and every item arrives with its tag, model, serial, status and location. On any paid plan, send us the file and we will load it by hand.

Read this bit first — we may be the wrong product for you

If Snipe-IT is your IT asset register — laptops issued to staff, software licences, accessories, consumable stock, EOL dates, audit cycles — then Snipe-IT is a better fit than we are, and we would rather say so than sell you something that does not do the job. We have no licence records, no accessories, no components, no BYOD flag, no audit schedule.

Asset Giant is for physical kit that goes out of the door and needs to come back: tools on a van, cameras on a shoot, PA gear at a venue, plant on hire. If that is what your Snipe-IT install is really holding, everything below applies and you will find the move easy.

Step 1: Export your assets from Snipe-IT

Snipe-IT calls this the Custom Asset Report — the product’s own wording is “Select the options you want for your asset report” and “If you would like to export only certain items, use the options below to fine-tune your results.”

  • Open Reports then Custom Asset Report.
  • Tick the columns you want in the file. Include at least Asset Name, Asset Tag, Serial, Model Name, Model Number, Category, Status, Location, Purchase Cost, Purchase Date, Supplier, Manufacturer and Notes.
  • Generate the report. It downloads as a CSV.

Most list screens also carry an Export control with an Export all to CSV option, which is quicker if you want everything as it stands. Because Snipe-IT is self-hosted, you or your administrator can also take the data straight from the database — but the CSV is the route this guide uses, because it is the one the importer wants.

Step 2: Bring the file into Asset Giant

Open Settings then Import and drop the file on the upload box. Nothing is saved until you have seen the preview. Full walkthrough: Importing Your Existing Spreadsheet.

Which Snipe-IT column becomes which Asset Giant field

Snipe-IT documents its asset CSV columns, so this mapping is exact.

Snipe-IT column Becomes in Asset Giant Matched for you?
Name Asset Name Yes. The only column you must map.
Asset Tag Asset ID (match only) Yes. Used to recognise assets you already hold; never written over the Asset ID we generate.
Serial Serial Number Yes
Model Name Asset Name, or a custom field Choose it by hand. If your Name column is blank on some rows, Model Name is usually the better name column.
Model Number Model Number Yes
Manufacturer Manufacturer Yes
Category Category Yes. Anything you do not have yet is offered for creation on the preview.
Status Status Yes. Snipe-IT status labels such as Ready to Deploy or Deployed are offered for creation as your own statuses, or point them at the ones you already use. See Add Your Own Asset Statuses, Such as In for Repair.
Location or Location Name Location Yes
Default Location Location, or a custom field Choose it by hand — map only one of the two location columns to Location.
Purchase Cost Purchase Price Yes
Purchase Date Purchase Date Yes
Supplier Supplier Yes
Order Number A custom field Create it from the spare column on the matching step.
Notes Notes Yes
Checkout Target or Full Name Checked Out To Choose it by hand. Use Assigned User only for people who will log in to Asset Giant.
Expected Checkin Due Back Choose it by hand.
Warranty Months A custom field, or work out the date Asset Giant holds a Warranty Expiration date rather than a number of months. If you want the expiry to work, add a column to your spreadsheet that adds the months to the purchase date, and map that to Warranty Expiration — then a reminder can be set on it. See Getting Alerts Before a Date Passes.
Company A custom field, or leave it out Your Asset Giant account is your company.
ID, Requestable, BYOD, Last Checkin, Last Checkout, Last Audit Date, Next Audit Date, EOL Date, Checkout Type, Username, Email No Asset Giant field Leave them unmapped, or keep any you need as custom fields. An unmapped column is simply ignored.

Dates. Snipe-IT writes dates as 2026-01-31, which the importer reads correctly whichever way the date-order box is set. If you have edited the file in a spreadsheet and the dates have been reformatted, check the green box at the top of the matching step.

What does not come across

  • Licences, accessories, components and consumables. Those are separate record types in Snipe-IT, and Asset Giant holds one kind of record. Two things you can do with them here: bring accessories and consumables in as assets with a quantity and a reorder level, so you are told when stock runs low (Setting a Reorder Level and Getting Low Stock Alerts), and bring licences in as assets of their own type with the renewal date in a date custom field and a reminder on it (Getting Alerts Before a Date Passes). Export them for your own records before you close the install down either way.
  • Check-in and check-out history, audit history, acceptance records. Historic movements stay in your export. What an item is out on right now comes across through Checked Out To and Due Back; attach the export to an asset as a document to keep the detail searchable, and Asset Giant keeps its own history from the day you import: See Who Changed an Asset, and When.
  • Photographs, QR labels and attachments. The importer reads a spreadsheet. Asset Giant generates its own QR codes and you print your own labels (Printing QR Code Labels); upload the pictures and files you already hold (Uploading and Managing Asset Photos, Keep Receipts, Manuals and Certificates with the Asset), or send us the folder and we will attach them for you.
  • Your users. Team members are invited rather than imported, and each one gets a role: Inviting Your First Team Member. Send us your user list and we will tell you which role fits each person before you send a single invite.
  • Snipe-IT’s asset tags, as Asset IDs. Asset Giant generates Asset IDs from the format in Settings → Preferences, for example TOOL-000001, and an import never overwrites one. Map Asset Tag so it can recognise items you already hold, and keep it in a custom field if your team knows kit by it.
  • Anything past your plan’s limits. The preview counts it before anything is written, and we will tell you which plan takes your list if you are near the line: What Happens When You Reach Your Asset Limit.

Anything on that list, we will sort out with you. On any paid plan our team does the manual part at no charge — photos, documents, and the Snipe-IT records that have no obvious home here, put where you want them. Send us the CSV and tell us what has to survive the move: How to Get Help and Support.

If it goes wrong, undo it

Every import can be undone for 7 days from Settings → Import. Created assets are deleted, changed assets are put back, and anything edited since is left alone and named in the result.

Would you rather we just did it?

On any paid plan, importing your spreadsheet is included — assets, locations, categories and clients, loaded by hand at no charge. Get in touch through How to Get Help and Support.
