Asset Giant launches free tool tracking that catalogues kit from a photo
United Kingdom, 28 July 2026 — A UK building contractor who got tired of never knowing where his tools were has launched Asset Giant, asset tracking software whose AI builds the inventory for you: photograph a tool, and the app identifies it and writes the record. Dan Huke built it for his own firm first. Blue Ladder Building expanded fast — up to 20 staff and five or six jobs running at once — and with that many people, vans and sites, nobody could reliably say where the tools and materials were. It cost real money in delays, duplicate purchases and lost kit, and it cost the firm its professional edge: nothing makes a good outfit look amateur like turning up to a customer's job without the right gear.
He had form for building his way out of a problem. Huke founded his first company, making unmanned airships for aerial photography, while still at university — years before affordable drones — and spent a subsequent career in academic publishing running IT projects and product management. When he went looking for software his team would actually use on site and couldn't find it, he was unusually well placed to write it himself.
The result targets the two moments where site software normally fails: getting the data in, and getting an answer out.
Getting it in is the job nobody ever finishes. Every inventory project in the trade dies at the same point — someone has to type in hundreds of items. Asset Giant's image identification removes that step: point a phone at a tool, and the AI recognises it and fills in the record for the user to confirm. A van's worth of kit becomes a real inventory in an afternoon rather than a lost weekend.
Getting an answer out is the job nobody has time for on site. Rather than making a busy site manager learn a database, Asset Giant includes an AI chatbot that answers plain questions about that company's own inventory — what's out on a particular job, where a specific tool went, what's free next week. It is deliberately the least software-like way in: if you can ask the question, you can use the system.
"Every inventory I've ever started died the same way: at about item forty, when whoever's doing it works out how long the typing will take," said Huke. "Photographing a tool and letting the AI fill in the details is the difference between a job that gets finished and one that quietly doesn't."
